Coffee with April
Denmark
Приєднався 23 вер 2016
We are April. A Coffee Roastery located in Copenhagen, founded by Patrik Rolf. This channel is all about sharing our perspective on all things coffee.
Jens - Copenhagen | Home Espresso Brewing with April #42
This week, we’re bringing you the latest video from a series that we call Home Espresso Brewing with April. We are back in Copenhagen, visiting local home brewers to see their approach to dialing in a mystery coffee.
We believe that innovation in coffee brewing starts at home, and that some of the most special and meaningful interactions with coffee can take place within your own kitchen.
As we are frequently travelling visiting our international partners, we decided to introduce this format as a way to interact with you on a different level whilst maintaining the frequency of our videos.
In this video, Jens dials in the mystery coffee using his home espresso set up consisting of a DF64 grinder with multipurpose burrs and the slow grind attachment, scales from Sopresta and Sense, a Profitech Pro 500 PID Espresso Machine, a Normcore Tamper and an assortment of small tools of which some were homemade.

Love watching Ahnstar videos. He has a very down to earth approach even to specialty coffee. I'm really glad his videos has English subtitles on them. 😊
Absolutely.
The only guy to make Patrik look small 😂
Hello! Is it possible to order the hybrid brewer for shipping to the US? Thank you.
Thank you for asking. It will be available online with worldwide shipping from the month of September.
Any chance you will be getting a Hario Suiren for testing? I have been brewing with this dripper for the past few days and find it very capable.
Not impossible. Let's see what comes our way the next few months.
April burrs for my Ditting 807 lab sweet?
That could be a thing for the future. What is your favourite grinder at the moment?
@@coffeewithapril my Ditting Lab Sweet 807. It would be nice to have burrs that were specific tailored to your coffees. Preferably espresso.
@@michaelvilster7201 absolutely.
Suntory water was good but Kirin water is softer and really great for coffee imo
Thank you for watching and recommending.
chuckled a little about "japanese pear" (I'm a pear "aficionado") there are so many pears in the world that you can find those characteristics in others, but I guess It a very good taste indication for japanese buyers
Thank you for watching. Descriptors on coffee flavors are always interesting, especially when you travel around the world.
come to Changsha / China Patrik!
Thank you for watching. Hopefully, we can do a China series in the future.
Watching this video makes me want to brew with Hiroshi ❤👍
That's great. Thank you for sharing. What was the best part of the video for you?
Actually, April plastic brewer is the best brewer ever with dark roasts! And it is designed to suit light roasts and high temperatures as well. It is extremely mighty and capable no matter what. I think it is for clean, separatable well-defined profiles of specialty coffee. The best brewer for (washed) and/ or "clean" coffees. Very dark Indonesian coffees, Colombian, Sidamo, ... etc. If it well roasted, it is to be well defined. El Salvador coffees are so clean, even if they are processed by weird fermentations. Ordered washed one already. Thank you, both of you! April& Kurasu (Kurasu's team | Mr. Hiroshi) are the best.
Thank you for watching and sharing. Yes, it works well on a range of roast degrees.
Agree! The series been great so far! Encourages social interactions within the community! Side note though the varia sounds exactly like the Lagom Mini while grinding!
Thank you for watching. In our experience the Mini is marginally less noisy. Either way, we prefer the grind quality on the Mini.
You know, I started watching these videos to get new ideas, but after watching so many of them I'm not really here for that reason anymore. It's juat pleasant to hang out and brew coffee together (at a distance). Thanks!
We appreciate the support Dylan. Good vibes.
Am I tripping or are Patrik’s hands silver? What is the reason?
I like that the host is good at asking questions and keeping the coffee conversation going without making it feel too forced or formal.
Thank you for the feedback. We are glad you liked it. Any ideas on how we can make it better?
@@coffeewithapril You're welcome. I'll give you all of my ideas if you invite me for a cup of coffee! I actually only just learned about April Coffee today through a friend, even though I live in Copenhagen, so I have yet to visit. I like that the videos are not "excessively" edited with a lot of cuts and graphics, etc. I enjoy the single, long, coherent take format that you're doing with the addition of the high quality close-ups, especially those focusing on the coffee-brewing process itself. This style makes for an informally relaxing and informative viewing experience. It is a nice change of pace from the short-attention-span media content so prevalent today. So, based on my own preferences, I'd suggest that you continue down this track that you are on, because I believe that the quality of your videos, and the identity surrounding your brand, will develop steadily and naturally this way.
I loved watching this video. I have been using the April brewer for a while and follow the standard recipe and use the pietro grinder. This video gave me a lot of inspiration. Just out of curiosity, how does one feature in this series?
Thank you for watching George. We are glad that you get inspired by the video. We post on social media whenever we are out traveling. And we are always happy to meet up if you are in the town that we are coming to. Where are you based?
@@coffeewithapril Ah, okay. Cool. I’m based in Stockholm. It would be awesome to invite you over and brew some coffee. I’ll keep an eye on the social media page. I’m based in Stockholm.
@@George_explores_coffee great. We make sure to reach out if we come up your way.
Saya Suka Kopi, Tapi karena Terbiasa minum Kopi Manis dengan creamer Jadi saya tidak dapat minum Kopi Hitam 😁 Salam Kopi Dari Indonesia
Chaff and fines are two different things.
Absolutely.
The home coffee brewing series deserves so many more views! Its simplicity, calmness and insightfulness is so refreshing compared to most of the YT coffee content that's out there.
That's kind of you. Thank you for watching. Any recommendations on how we push it to the next level?
@@coffeewithapril I just sent you an Email on your website with my perception of april and how I would like to see april move forward and grow in the next years. My name is Ralph
The aspect of 'pre-grinding' is totally new to me. Is it something that makes sense for home brewing, or is it more beneficial in a cafe environment? What exactly are the benefits flavor wise? As the naive amateur I am, my initial thought would be that flavor gets lost??
Thank you for watching. It would be beneficial at home and in the shop environment. Especially, if you brew lighter roasted coffees. The key is to dose it in a sealed (valve) container after it's ground. Try it out, and let us know how it goes.
I'm here for Takashi!
Thank you for watching.
A lovely setting to make coffee. What was the name of the little discs he used to go in underneath the filter ? Thanks I’ve just seen in description - thanks
Thank you for watching. The disks are from Sibarist - a Spanish based company that also produces paper filter. We are not convinced they improve the extraction in this case. But it's always interesting to try new things.
Wow. Beautiful butsudan with ancestors photos, alcove with tasteful art of a kabuto, rice paper panels in perfect shape on the doors and lovely commode on the right, possibly cherry and hand made. Takashi-san is definitely not a commoner 😎
We always wanted to visit an older style Kyoto House so this was a real treat.
One of my favorite episode. I can see how happy he is when brewing.❤
Thank you for watching. Yeah, he was really excited and we think that shows in the brew quality. Have you tried his recipe?
I have tried both recipes, my initial thought was to change the grind size to get more contact time but his brew made me want to explore more between the ratio of circle pour and center pour. Thank you for the inspiration as always.
@@InthatUeasakareeTaottao Thank you for sharing.
Starting 33:08 on brew ratio. Is the roast generally made for the brew ratio?
What a pleasant place to drink a coffee
Absolutely, and as always the setting for where you enjoy a cup of coffee makes a difference. What/where is your favorite place to drink coffee?
Setting is awesome! The house suited for matcha ceremony just became ceremonial coffee session 😅
Beauitful house, no doubt. And some great tasting coffee. Do you have a favourite Japanese coffee roastery?
Very relaxing, thanks!
Thank you for watching as always, Dylan. What is your take on this episode?
@@coffeewithapril it's always nice to see new approaches to brewing. I never grind my coffee in advance, even though I've seen you recommend it before. Is it something you'd recommend for all coffee?
Also curious to hear more about pre-grinding coffee since it’s so different from how many of us learn to approach this, especially re: espresso!
@@DavidButler-tq7ve it really helps clean up the structure of the coffee.
@@dylanbeschoner yes.
What is the name of the 2 way coffee mug? @16 mins?
Doesn’t feel high end? Really??
Fun concept!
Thank you for watching, oskar.
excited to try out this recipe (again)!!
SSP MP burrs when the brewing recipe, coffee and water aligns perfectly = coffee nirvana! The only cons with SSP is it’s a PITA to get that perfect execution on some coffee beans
Thank you for sharing. We haven't been able to get brews that we are happy with using the SSP. But we are always interested in hearing how others are using it.
@@coffeewithapril I run my P64 grinder at 800 rpm and extract at higher TDS than standard recipe (~1.5 or 21-22% EY). The lower TDS makes it taste too thin and not enough texture
Really appreciate every part of this experience. Thank you to both Patrik and to April for the opportunity. ❤️
Ian🔥
Thank you for watching. It was a great event and we are looking forward to our next U.S event in Huston after the summer.
April, still rocking in June
Thank you for watching. Would you be up for competing in the April Brewers Cup if you got the chance?
@@coffeewithaprilI'm a huge April fan, you guys don't follow, but lead and rethink the entire coffee industry. Your cups are really cool and different, your clothing line isn't for me, but it's definitely different, so is the coffee table. I totally love the home brewing videos, they are so refreshing, insightful and just different compared to other coffee related videos. All this being said, I personally don't like the coffee competition part too much. I know you're participating in all kind of coffee events for years, but I find the rules they're based on a bit random and the presentation style is very similar throughout the competitors, at least in the WBC.

Hallo slm kenall dr indonesia Timur
Thank you for another cool video! About the comandante not appearing super often - I have sold mine for example. For me it produced some bitterness to every coffee, especially anything processed and I’ve been very happy switching to Sculptor 078. Less fines, less bitterness
Thank you for sharing. We are also using the Sculptor 078 with some great results. What's the grind size you would use for a standard 12/200 brew?
Love this recipe. but I still use 13g of coffee.
Thank you for watching and sharing how you are brewing. Any alternations to the recipe or identical apart from the 13g dose? What's the grind size and grinder you would use?
I really like his approach, with a slightly lighter dose and one long, single poor after blooming. Thanks again for this brew at home series, April. )
Thank you for watching. Let's us know how it works our for you.
Another great video in this series, good job. Would love to see more from the Japanese coffee scene.
Thank you for watching. We will stay in Japan for the next three videos.
I think having another April Coffee branch would be so nice to see in Japan :)
We think so too.
I've broken two of your glass brewers! It really is beautiful. My favorite brewer ever. Eventually ill pick up another one, or maybe get the wood
We should start selling them in kits of 2-3 units.
@@coffeewithapril lmao. Maybe but I'm one of those idiots who would only buy one and just tell myself I won't break another
Your glass brewer is my favorite design. I have one plastic one because i keep breaking the glass ones. Someday ill get another glass one or a porcelain one
That way the Plastic comes in handy. We currently do full glass (brewer, server and the new mug).
Chicago! I'm in Madison Wisconsin, just a few hours away. :) Also, same name as me
15:23 대황빈
Yeah. Tasted great.
I brewed the same coffee used in this video this morning. Do you have any tips for brewing it with a v60 instead of the april brewer? Or should I just get an april brewer haha
You could just get an April Brewer... But if you are using an V60 we have some great recipes on this channel as well. They are a bit old at this point but they still hold up well. If you for example are doing a 12/200 brew we would recommend pushing 4 pours at 50g with an even amount of time in between each pour.
This makes me want to take a hike and brew some coffee!
It's a great combination. Do you have any favourite way to brew outdoor?
I like how he looks so calm like staying at home for real lol, very easy to follow brewing structure.
We are glad you like it. It's some serious home vibes for sure. That's one of the advantages with meeting up with our Home Brewers at home, it makes them a lot more comfortable than if we were bringing them to a studio.
Finally someone with more April brewers than I own :) . I have two plastics (Blue, Pink), OG set, new ceramic and glass. I like glass the most. I’m not sure I find it the slowest, it works great for me and creates juicy cups
Thank you for the support. The Wood Brewer will launch later this summer. Which of the Brewers would you use to brew a lighter roasted Kenyan coffee?
@@coffeewithapril Wood sounds amazing! Can’t wait. I’d probably gravitate towards Glass but if I wanted more sweetness I’d use ceramic
